Lake Texoma

You have your cowboy boots on and you’re ready to go – but where? The West is calling you, and you are ready to find your place in this dusty land of opportunity. But should you choose the dynamic state of Oklahoma – the beauty of the Great Plains, the rich history, the legends, and the amazing capital, Oklahoma City? Or should you choose Texas – big, bold, rugged, unique, and the legendary city of Dallas?

If you are torn between Oklahoma and Dallas for your next apartment, don’t worry – you can have it all! The solution? Texoma! Texoma is located on the Oklahoma/Texas border between Dallas and Oklahoma City. (This area isn’t to be confused with Texhoma, which is both a town and a city on the Texas-Oklahoma border, with the city on the Oklahoma side and the town on the Texas side.) Texoma is located along the Red River near Lake Texoma. The area is also referred to as Texomaland.

During the 1950s, Texoma-Land gained popularity as the “Playground of the Southwest” due to the fields, ranches, waterfalls, mountains, forests, caves, and lakes. The most popular lake is still Lake Texoma, a 93,000-acre lake that is considered some of the best fishing in the country.  It is one of the largest reservoirs in the US and is formed by the Denison Dam on the Red River.

The massive Lake Texoma is surrounded by parks, campgrounds, marinas, resorts, hiking trails, horseback riding trails, playgrounds, and more.  Eisenhower State Park is located on the lake near Denison, Texas. This park has a popular ATV trail, campsites, the Eisenhower Yacht Club with rental services, and lakeside trails for hiking and biking.  Lake Texoma attracts about six million visitors a year and is located only about an hour away from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The lake also includes two wildlife refuges, Lake Texoma State Resort Park, a dozen marinas, more than 20 resorts, and golf courses.

The Texoma area is gaining in popularity because of Lake Texoma, its proximity to Dallas and Fort Worth, nearby Lake Murray State Park, the Red River, and the nearby WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Oklahoma. The casino opened in 2004 and is the largest casino in Oklahoma. It contains a 46-table poker room, more than 75 game tables, off-track betting, a high-limit room, and well over 7,000 electronic games. It includes a 3,500-seat Global Event Center, which hosts performers such as ZZ Top, Maroon 5, Tony Bennett, Jay Leno, Adam Lambert, and Lil Wayne.  The WinStar Golf Club is a 27-hole course that holds major golf tournaments. The casino also has an RV park for casino patrons.

When looking for a Texoma apartment, consider the city of Gainesville, Texas. This city is quickly gaining in popularity due to its excellent location – just north of Dallas and a short drive from Lake Texoma. It is also home to North Central Texas College and Frank Buck Zoo. Other cities in the Texoma area include Ardmore, Lawton, Durant, and Wichita Falls.
