A New Look for the New Year

The Christmas trees have come down and the decorations are all boxed away. It’s a little sad to see the festive holiday decor back in storage, but take advantage of the fresh perspective to make a few changes to your apartment. Now is the ideal time to redecorate – you are rearranging furniture and replacing knickknacks anyway, so why not go that extra step and try some new colors or patterns in your space?

Has the whirlwind of holidays left you a little strapped for cash? That’s okay – redecorate without spending a cent by using what you already have in a different way. For example, use like-colored items in a grouping — this is a great way to add a focal point to a lonely wall or a side table. Rearrange your furniture to give your space a facelift without adding anything new. Paint a wall or give your coffee table a quick makeover with some fresh paint and perhaps some stencils.

Just focusing on a window can give your room a completely different feel. Change a standard curtain rod for a decorative one, add new curtains, or make a valance. Ditch fabric curtains completely and replace them with bamboo Roman shades for a modern, clean look.

Add just a pop of color with throw pillows and accent pieces in the latest trend – tangerine is the hot color for 2012. With this vibrant citrus shade, a little will go a long way – find an accent chair for your living room or add a vase or tablecloth to your dining table. If you want to add an even smaller hint, get a can of tangerine-colored spray paint and give a picture frame or some candlesticks a burst of color. Get creative – take your own photo. Find something in this exciting shade or stack some tangerines on your kitchen counter. Zoom in, snap a few shots, pick your favorite, and take it to a photo shop to have it enlarged. Frame it and you’ll have a designer look without a designer price.

If bold colors just aren’t for you, floral patterns and the styles of the roaring 20s are heating up the runways – use these fashion trends as a starting point for your updated apartment decor. A lamp with a fringe shade, a floral floor pillow, a couple of art deco finds from the local flea market, and some feathers and glitz (think sequins) will have your place looking trendy and fresh in no time.
