And Let the Summer Begin

Summer Fun

Happy Summer Solstice!

Today is the official first day of summer, but with temperatures averaging in the mid-to-upper 90s for the past month or so here in Atlanta, we’ve been deep into summer-like weather for a while now. I’ve been thinking about how quickly summer will pass, and how we haven’t really stopped to enjoy this great time of year – the kids are out of school and the daylight stretches well past 8pm, so it’s time to get out and enjoy it before it’s gone.

Perhaps, like me, you’ve been focused on work and other activities. Take some time today, the longest day of the year, to do a little planning and make this summer a memorable one. Spend your weekends barbecuing or picnicking at a nearby park. If your apartment complex doesn’t have a pool, join a local public pool or take a weekend trip to the beach. Take a day off of work and take the kids to a local water park or amusement park. My husband has Fridays off during the summer and is planning on taking the kids to Six Flags White Water. From Disney’s Blizzard Beach to Wisconsin Dell’s Wilderness Waterpark Resort, a day (or a long weekend) of water-filled fun is the perfect way to escape the heat.

If a summer vacation or trips to water parks aren’t in the budget this year, check your city’s website for inexpensive (or free) events. From California to Virginia, there are summer festivals and celebrations the whole family will enjoy. Farmer’s markets, flea markets, and art shows are plentiful, and state parks offer great weekend getaways for camping, hiking, swimming, and fishing. Sometimes, a “staycation” can be even more relaxing than a trip out of town – especially if you spend some time playing tourist in your own backyard. See some historic sites, visit local landmarks, go to a museum, dine out at a restaurant you’ve never been to before, or spend an afternoon at the zoo – you may discover some new favorite places around town.

No matter what you decide to do this summer, have fun and stay safe!
