If you’re one of the lucky apartment residents who are able to snag a garage at your complex, you’ll need a game plan for organizing and making the most of the valuable space. Whether you use the garage for your car or for storage, take advantage of that extra space! Here are our top tips for organizing your apartment’s garage!

Figure out how the car/cars fit

First, park the car in the garage and, on the floor, tape an outline of the car. Don’t forget to leave space for the car doors to open. The most important part of organizing a garage is figuring out exactly how much space will be left for storage. This is especially true if you’re moving into an apartment with a garage for the very first time. Once the tape is down, back the car out and see how much space you have to work with.

Shelving units

The most important thing for organizing any space is multiplying the potential of that space. Shelving units in the garage are the best way to do this. They don’t have to be pretty. The cheap, metal frame shelves you can buy almost anywhere will work and will give you the most bang for your buck. The shelving units that have adjustable height shelves will also make storing tools and other items easier to deal with.

Stackable storage bins

Storage bins with lids are perfect for those things people use only a few times a year. It could be camping equipment, or your holiday decorations. And if you use bins, they stack easily atop each other.

Worktable/bench

If there is room for a table in the back of your garage, or off to the side, this is a must-have item. A garage can provide a valuable, dedicated workspace not available in apartments without garages. Things can be stored underneath the workbench, and tools can be strung up on the wall behind it using a peg board. Even if the car has to be backed out to use the workspace, it is better for you to do your DIY projects or repairs at a designated area and save your car from possible dings and scratches.

Overhead hooks

Hooks were invented for a reason, my friend. They offer an enormous amount of storage capabilities, up and out of the way – but still in reach when you need it. Manufacturers make custom hooks for hanging bicycles, but even basic hooks can be used for hiking backpacks and duffel bags. These hooks can help get things off the ground and off the shelves.

Keep in mind ease of access

When organizing a garage, don’t forget to keep “ease of access” in mind. Things stored in a garage that are needed often should be easy to retrieve. Those items should be stored on the shelves that are easiest to reach and near either the garage door, or the door leading into the apartment.

It can be easy to let your garage become disorganized, but with these tips, your life will become easier and much more orderly. For any and all of your garage needs, Sears Garage Doors is happy to take care of you.
