Even though everyone is ready for a bright, warm summer, sadly there’s no helping if winter is sticking around for a few more weeks. Especially if you live further north, you are probably ready for a bout of sunshine instead of this on-and-off-again cold weather! If you find that you’re suffering from a mild case of the winter blues, there are a few things that you can still do to enjoy the coming spring.

Take advantage of your apartments outdoor amenities

Spending quality time outdoors is one of the best ways to combat the feeling of being cooped up all winter. True enough, it’s still fairly cold outside, but if you can bundle up, taking the time for a brisk walk outdoors is sometimes just enough to help you get the essential sunlight you need.

If your apartment community offers outdoor amenities, this is a great reason to take advantage of those special features now. Cold as it is, you can still use the nature trails, play a game of basketball, or even  start planting some seeds in your apartment’s community garden!

Grow plants on your windowsills

The weather outside may not be warm enough for you to start growing plants depending on where you live now, but the indoor climate is always just right for some houseplants. Studies show that people who keep houseplants tend to be less stressed out.

Some of the easiest and most beautiful plants to take care of in your home are succulents (like aloes) or the tough snake plant. Not only does a houseplant introduce a much-needed splash of greenery into your home, but it also serves as a pleasant reminder that spring is just around the corner.

Move your interior space around

Sometimes, just giving your apartment a change of scenery is all you need to feel refreshed. For example, if your sofa has been against that back wall all winter, try moving it into a part of the apartment that gives you a bit more exposure to sunlight from the windows.

Another popular idea for shaking up your interior design is to push the heavy furniture against the walls. This gives you much more walking space in the apartment, and creates a nice feeling of openness and spaciousness.

Join in on community events

Most apartment communities offer programming for all residents to participate in – or if they don’t, there is certainly opportunities for you and your neighbors to come up with social events together. Particularly around the big holidays, many apartment communities will offer some way for you to get involved with your community.

Being social is another great way to overcome those winter blues. By getting out there and talking with your neighbors and fellow community members, you can make new friends and make social plans with others.

Start spring-cleaning early

When you are cooped up in your apartment all winter long, you may find yourself in desperate need for an early spring cleaning event. On your next free weekend, take the time to do a deep clean of your apartment. Change all your sheets, polish all the hardwood floors and steam the carpets, dust the nooks and crannies of your apartment you don’t usually get to.

You might be surprised by how much more peaceful you feel about your living space once you’ve given your home a top-to-bottom cleaning. If you have young kids, you can also get them involved in the cleaning process by collecting old toys and too-small clothes that you can donate, in order to clear out more living space.
