Tips to Hosting a Tailgate Party in Your Rental

Author: Lauren Ross

There’s a lot to look forward to when fall officially hits. Coffee shops and bakeries will begin (if not already) selling pumpkin-spiced treats. The foliage will start to turn brilliant shades of orange, red and gold; and swimsuits and shorts will be exchanged for oversized sweaters, snug boots and blue jeans.

Fall also means one more thing: FOOTBALL.

And what goes hand in hand with football season? Tailgating, of course! No matter what team you cheer for, everyone can agree there’s nothing like grilling out and chilling with friends in a parking lot at home field. If you can’t make it to see your team on gameday this year, don’t miss out on the fun – host a tailgate party in your apartment!

A great party needs prep and planning. First, decide on the decorations and theme. Are you going with general football décor, or are you hosting a viewing party for your favorite team? You can find all your party favors at any big-box retailer or party supply store. One idea you can try is placing a football field table runner on the area you plan on serving food. Pinterest offers some cool decorating tips, as well as gameday-inspired recipes. Streamers, balloons, and football trivia can really get the party moving and shaking.

The menu you prepare for your guests is just as important as the decorations, if not more. Keep the appetizer selection simple to just a few classics, such as chips and queso or spicy buffalo chicken poppers. Chili, hot dogs, hamburgers and grilled chicken kabobs are always favorite food dishes at tailgates. For healthier options, check out these delicious tailgating recipes.

As the host, be sure to fill your fridge with ice-cold beverages, such as beer, water and sodas. To give your party a more authentic outside tailgating experience, fill a cooler with ice and beverages for guests attending the party. Make sure you have enough seating for everyone coming, with chairs positioned in front of the TV for a clear view of the game. Folding chairs can help add extra seating if needed.
