When you think of summer break, you think of loafing by the pool and going on vacation. This year however, maybe you have to forgo a summer beach retreat or a European backpacking excursion because of rising gas prices or a tight budget. If you’re vacationing at home this summer, here’s a list of “staycation” ideas that will have you feeling relaxed and well-rested without the vacation expenses.

Staycation ideas to do during your time off:

Go for a bike ride. Summer is the perfect season to break out the bike. Going on a bike ride through the streets of your apartment community is a great way to relax while getting fresh air. You don’t have to just stick to your neighborhood; try venturing out to the nearest park trails, greenways, or take a ride through town.  Take it one step further and register for a charity bike riding fundraiser or blaze a trailhead with other biking enthusiasts.

Lounge by the pool. A day at the pool might be just what you need to relax. So grab your pool necessities, and head on over to the swimming pool for some fun in the sun. It may not be the beach, but you can definitely catch up on some much needed R&R – and you can do it in your own backyard.

Take a leisurely walk through town. Take a stroll through town to ease your mind on your time off. It’s a great way to explore the shops and attractions that make up the area and you can do some shopping along the way. Conclude your self-guided tour with a delicious ice cream cone from the neighborhood ice cream shop.

Have a cookout party. The summer season is all about the pool and BBQ. So for this year’s staycation, invite your friends, family, or neighbors over for a fun cookout party. You can make the event a potluck style feast, where everyone has to bring a dish, or you can create the menu from scratch.

Get lost in a summer read on your patio. Getting lost in a good book is on my summer to do list – will it be on yours? During your staycation time, grab an iced coffee, a novel, and enjoy a quiet afternoon of reading on your patio.
