Refreshing Cold Mint Julep

When people consider having a party at their home based on a sporting event, they often think of the Super Bowl, the most-watched television program each year.

One of the most underrated sporting spectacles happens to be the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. With a $2 million purse for the top thoroughbred, the combination of an exhilarating two-minute race with a party-like atmosphere makes for an unforgettable day in the Bluegrass State.

On the first Saturday in May, “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” takes place in Louisville, Kentucky. The Kentucky Derby has run every consecutive year since 1875. If you don’t believe us that the event is popular, attendance at the Kentucky Derby ranks first in North America for any sporting event!

Everyone and their mother will throw a Super Bowl party. Inviting friends over in fancy hats and preppy clothes on the first Saturday in May for the Derby will make for an cherished get-together at your apartment.

Below are five tips on how to throw the perfect Kentucky Derby bash at your apartment.

1. Dress Attire

Have you seen some of the lavish hats worn in Louisville during the derby? The camera will focus nearly as much attention on the extravagant outfits versus the thoroughbred horses (who are actually doing the racing). Don’t take our word for it though; check out Pinterest for inspirational Derby outfits.

Make sure when you invite all of your friends that you put a strict dress code on the event. For guys, this should include khakis and Sperry’s. For the ladies, a spring-inspired dress with a memorable hat.

2. Barbeque

Combining the springtime weather, Kentucky Derby, and a party with friends certainly calls for a Barbeque!

Whether your grill is on the patio at your apartment or down at the pool, make sure to get some burgers, hot dogs, and cold beverages prepared. If you are a tad bit rusty lighting up the grill, refresh your memory with these barbeque essentials.

After a long winter, all of your friends will be thankful for the barbeque atmosphere prior to Memorial Day weekend. They also won’t have an empty stomach while cheering on their favorite horse.

3. Adult Drinks

You know the Kentucky Derby is a party atmosphere when on KentuckyDerby.com, they actually have an entire page dedicated to drink recipes.

The official drink of the Kentucky Derby is The Early Time Mint Julep and the Grey Goose® Oaks Lily®. We recommend making both of the drinks for your apartment party that will be on-site at Churchill Downs.

4. Social Media Contest

If everyone follows the dress code, there are going to be some awesome outfits at your Derby get-together! The last thing you want to happen is to not have pictures to remember the day.

Create a contest where everyone poses individually for a picture in his or her derby outfit. Use an application like PicFrame where you can upload all of the photos into one frame for all of your friends to see!

Have the guy and girl at your apartment with the most followers post the picture of all of the outfits from the opposite sex onto their Instagram account. It will be up to the judges (your social following) to pick the best outfit.

After the winners have been selected, everyone can start posting their photos individually. Just be prepared for your social media networks to start blowing up!

5. Games

There is an entire website dedicated to Kentucky Derby Party information! How great is that?

According to KYDerbyparty.info, if you want to have a vested interest in a horse, take the following action at your Derby party.

Put all of the names of the horses in a hat and mix them up.  Everyone pays a designated amount, say $1, to pull a name out of the hat.  When the race is complete, the person that has the winning horse collects the pot.  Or, offer a percentage of the pot for the first place horse, a smaller percentage to the second place horse, and an even smaller percentage to the third place horse.

Finish Line

Your apartment is a place where lasting memories should be made. Throwing a get-together for the Kentucky Derby at your rental community will be a fun day that all of your guests will remember.
