Houston, TEXAS (May 19, 2010) –How can over 400 employees at one of FORTUNE’s 100 Best Places to Work For pull off a rehearsed flash mob dance right under the CEO’s nose? It wasn’t easy, but in Camden’s culture with values that include having fun, the extraordinary often happens. At the company’s annual Management Conference in Houston last week, Ric Campo, CEO, Keith Oden, President and Malcolm Stewart, COO, were called up on stage during a dance set being played by The Birds – the company’s in-house band. To the senior executives’surprise, over 400 of Camden’s employees headed onto the dance floor and broke into a synchronized dance as the Black Eyed Peas song “I Gotta Feeling” began to play.
“At first I was baffled, then amazed and then humbled,” said Stewart. “To think that these busy, talented Camden managers made time to learn, practice and execute this dance is incredible.”
To make the surprise happen, rehearsals took place over the past several months with employees from 79 cities nationwide coordinating the dance. This was no small feat since the dance requires the coordination of several different sections starting at different times. The group never practiced as a whole before the mob dance.
“It gave me goose bumps,” said Campo. “Of course, if they could do this without us knowing you have to wonder what else is going on we don’t know about,” smiled Oden.
“We were recently named for the third year in a row to FORTUNE’s 100 Best Places to Work For list, this year ranking #10. We feel fortunate to work for such an incredible company and wanted to surprise Ric, Keith and Malcolm to show our appreciation,” said Linda Willey, Director of Property Services, who got the idea from the Oprah Winfrey show and coordinated the national logistics. “I saw the dance tribute to Oprah and when we began to tell people what we wanted to do, whether they were from our construction group, finance department or community management, the excitement began to spread and everyone was thrilled to be involved in the surprise.”
“I’m not sure how we can top this moment as a company. But knowing this team and our culture, we’ll find a way,” said Oden.
