I’ve been speaking to a lot of folks out there about CommunitySherpa and social media in my travels, and it’s interesting — when polled, most groups in the multi-family industry are heavy facebook users, but when it comes to twitter, those numbers drop dramatically.
I guess it shouldn’t be that surprising — after all, the industry is largely female, and twitter stats from Hitwise show that 63% of twitterers are male (while 67% of facebookers are female). A few more interesting stats:
- Twitter’s largest age demographic is 35-44 year-olds (26%)
- California residents account for 57% of twitter visitors
- The two particularly common types of twitterers are “Stable Career (young and ethnically diverse singles) and “Young Cosmopolitan” (40-somethings who are politically liberal)
That being said, there are some compelling reasons to be involved on twitter for your business. Chris Brogan wrote a great article called “50 Ideas on Using Twitter for Business” that is a must-read. Chris says,
We really can’t deny the fact that businesses are testing out Twitter as part of their steps into the social media landscape. You can say it’s a stupid application, that no business gets done there, but there are too many of us (including me) that can disagree and point out business value.
So gentlemen — and ladies! — take a closer look at twitter. You could be missing out on a great opportunity.
